The Morning After

Dull grey skies greet your eyes
Pounding in your brain
In flashes now the night creeps back
Its pleasure and its pain

Through clouds of smoke your lover spoke
Words you can’t recall
The wine was spilled the cups refilled
A mattress broke your fall

With no regret you can’t forget
His eyes upon your soul
With tender lips upon your hips
The darkness took its hold

Candle wax, red nails on backs
A moth drawn to the flame
The pleasure and the pain somehow
Became one in the same
